Take a look at the video of Hagen Betzwieser's 'burning 'performance', a fitting end to a project about trees? Video>>

In September 2008 I had a short project residency at one of Scandinavia’s leading contemporary art venues. NDK is located on the west coast of Norway 3 hours north from Bergen. My visit came at the end of a summer of travelling around Scandinavia.

I decided to turn my studio inside out and make a planetarium, using an old overhead light projector to make star maps on the walls and ceilings. I also projected them back out into the night sky, using an optical effect called 'Pepper's Ghost' by stage magicians, to create the illusion of 3d stars hanging just outside the windows on the edge of the real forest.

I also wanted to bring the forest in and made a large drawing from rolls of newsprint and pencil by rubbing on the wooden floor. I began to bring pine cones in to sit at the foot of the drawing. The room was beginning to become another theatre set.

At certain times of day the reflections of the forest drawing would merge in the window glass with the shapes of the pines growing just by the studio.

At night, I projected star maps of deer leaping through the forest onto the drawing. As eyes adjusted the trees in the drawing began to move forward and become visible again.

Over dinner, the residents discussed how different cultures view the night sky, what they see and how they interpret it.

Finally, the drawing was destroyed:
